Renee Arakaki was born on the 12th of October 1957 in San Mateo, California. She moved to Honolulu, Hawai'i in 1965 where she studied communications at the University of Hawai'i (B.A. 1981). She later studied composition with Allen Trubitt, E. Takeo Kudo and Armand Russell and in 2002 received her doctorate from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Back in Hawai'i, Ms Arakaki worked as a professional musician from 1981-1991 playing guitar and singing in rock bands. She has worked as an Arts and Sciences academic advisor at the University of Hawai'i - Manoa. Her compositions are expressive and often reflect her personal inner self.
